What are my choices?
It’s a proper job. Fact. You get experience and skills in a sector you choose, and from the start you get paid, including holidays. Not bad?
There are a lot of sectors - engineering, construction, retail, childcare and more (link to range of apprenticeships). So you get the chance to start a real career in a sector you want.
You need to be at least 16 and not in full-time education.
You’ll have to graft, no messing – you’ll have a boss, you’re being taught but you’ve everything to gain from it.
It’ll last for between 1-4 years and can be at different levels - intermediate, advanced and higher - depending on your existing qualifications. Don’t worry if you don’t have many qualifications – you might still get an apprenticeship after first doing a Traineeship or a Study Programme (see below)
There you go, that’s an Apprenticeship.
Traineeships help young people to develop the skills needed for apprenticeships and sustainable employment. A traineeship consists of a work experience placement, work preparation training and support with English and Maths for those who need it.
Programme of study
Study Programmes are for 16-19 year olds, tailored to your individual needs and designed to open up options for future study or work. They will involve a mix of study and more practical activity – you will take at least one qualification you need to progress, but will also get work experience and learn what is expected of you in the workplace.
